Our Risk.
Our Choice.

The decision to bring all of Canada’s nuclear waste to South Bruce is going to happen very soon.  Right now, the NWMO and the Municipality of South Bruce are deciding how they will determine if our community is “informed and willing”. Their final decision is expected in 2022, in advance of the next municipal election (October 23, 2022).

The goal of the Our Risk. Our Choice. campaign is to convince municipal council that the only legitimate way to determine willingness is a binding referendum. Our elected officials have the authority to make October 23, 2022, REFERENDUM DAY on South Bruce’s willingness to host the NWMO’s Deep Geological Repository.

Without a choice, we have no voice.

The only people qualified to determine willingness are the people affected by it – the residents of South Bruce. No small group of people, however well-intentioned, have the right to make that decision for us.

A referendum on South Bruce’s future. But only if we petition for it.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has promised many economic benefits to whatever community agrees to host its multi-billion facility and the jobs that come with it. Yet, these promises also come with many risks.

Some support the NWMO’s plan, and others who do not. Some are undecided. We invite all of them to support this demand for a binding referendum, so that their voices are not only heard but respected.

Every resident of South Bruce must have the opportunity to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

Once made, the hosting decision cannot be undone. If yes, South Bruce will embark on a path to host all of Canada’s nuclear waste. It will be buried 500 metres below our feet and remain here forever. If no, it means the possible benefits are not worth the risks.

PETITION TO THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF SOUTH BRUCE

I urge the Mayor and Council of the Municipality of South Bruce, Ontario, to declare that a binding referendum, and only a binding referendum, will be used to determine the willingness of our community to host the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s (NMWO) Deep Geological Repository (DGR).

And, I further urge the Mayor and Council to declare that the 2022 Municipal Election period, in addition to being used to elect our mayor and councillors be used as the referendum voting process.
